Empire of the Sun

Tristan and I have been anticipating the Empire of the Sun North American tour for quite some time now... And while I must admit the show was entertaining, I wasn't that wowed by their music. Sure they have some great tunes, but I wasn't a big fan of the album as a whole, so when they started to performs songs I would normally skip over on my iPod, I felt myself getting a little bored. The plus side was that the theatrics were interesting enough to make up for it.

As for their bangers...I got a youtube notification that my video might have some sort of content owned by Sony... so we'll see how long this video stays up!

I'm head over heels in love with this band. I can't recall now where I first heard of them... Stereogum or KCRW. Or maybe both? Either way, I'm glad I did because they're so much fun to listen to, and even more fun to watch live!

We caught them play their first Toronto show at The Garrison. Sorry for the low light, it really doesn't do the lead singers facial expressions any justice, but believe me, calling him animated would be an understatement. Favourite tune: Up Up Up

Tristan and I missed them last summer because their show was the same night as... someone else and I can't recall who now, but I was disappointed to miss it. So I'm glad we were able to catch these guys at the Sound Academy in April.

These guys are so good - and I just don't understand why they aren't wildly popular yet (I feel like I've posted that before)? For a long time, their album Flux Outside was my go to shower soundtrack. What constitutes a shower soundtrack? An album I can play front to back and not have the urge to skip tunes... Not that my showers take that long.

Anyway, they were great live and there were probably 40 people at The Drake Underground to see them. Which was intimate, but kind of a shame.

Wow - I can't believe I haven't posted anything since Canadian Music Week!

I've been a little busy - mainly because:

1. I got a new job (www.popchips.com)
2. I'm getting married (less than 6 months away!)
3. I have a lack of iron in my diet that makes me incredibly tired (read: napping overtakes blogging)

Well I didn't think anyone read this blog, but according to google stats, I've got people reading all the way in the Netherlands! So my sincere apologies, I actually have a ton of great videos to share! I'm uploading them as we speak, but in the meantime, here is an onslaught of videos that I posted to youtube but never got around to blogging about... enjoy!

It was Canadian Music Week/Fest this past week in Toronto. Usually I'm a real hater for this festival because I think their wristband system is a total rip off, but I gotta say, I had a good time this year.

Probably because I bought tickets to the shows I wanted...

More money, but certainly worth it.

Friday I went to the POP Montreal showcase briefly at The Drake, and then ran over to Lee's to catch Bombay Bicycle Club! I discovered these guys in early 2009 thanks to the BBC, and I've been waiting for them to come to Toronto ever since. They're stupid young, but really talented!

Saturday I went to the Indies at the Royal York to see my lovely friends Shad and Tlo open up for Janelle Monae. Here's his version of Call Waiting over TLC's Creep.

Janelle Monae was LOTS of fun... but here's a little bit of her softer side.

She hosted the 2nd half of The Main Ingredient which turned into a crazy dance party on stage, and if you skip over to the 2min mark in this video, you'll catch her vibing out to California :)

So I've been slacking on the blog front... but I have a good excuse.

THE MANIFESTO.

I've been busy blogging over there, and doing just about everything else to do with web, creative, marketing and PR. A ton of concerts I've been to have pretty much been solely Manifesto related I think... And since I was often working the event, I didn't have any time to film it myself.

The Union Line opened at the sold out Local Natives show yesterday.

There was another band there, The Ruby Suns. But let's not talk about them.

Local Natives never disappoint. I'm excited to hear a new album having seen them tour on this one 3 times now... But I can't complain - this was one of my favourite albums of 2009! I was also pleased to see the one dude hasn't shaved his mustache yet. Still going strong!

Sometimes I wonder if the band I'm filming ever watches my concert footage from their show in Toronto (or wherever I catch them)... I mean it isn't that far fetched right?

So in the off chance that Mayer Hawthorne may one day read this - I heard you were asking people at the Meet'n'Greet what their favourite food is. Mine is ice cream and cupcakes. And Korean food in general, especially Kimchi Jigae (Kimchi Stew). Mmmm.

I think we'd be great friends. Just saying.

Last Mayer Hawthorne show I forgot my camera. Balls. And sadly, this time around security told us not to film so we only caught 1 minute of this. Enjoy nonetheless!

So I took a short hiatus from blogging - but that doesn't mean I didn't hit a ton of concerts since my last post!

I've finally updated my youtube and posted some footage from a ton of shows from July to yesterday.

First are some joints from my trip to New York for the Brooklyn Hip Hop Festival.

Manifesto coordinated a bus-trip down to Brooklyn to collaborate with the BHHF by doing a BK meet TO showcase. In exchange, they did the same with our festival here and did a TO meet NY show headlined by Jean Grae at The Great Hall. No footage from that sadly, but we'll be posting some shortly on ManifestoTV.

So here's one I found online... They play this crazy dance music with an accordian and horns, and 2 guys play beats from this sound machine and ipads. IT'S SO STRANGE AND AWESOME!

The Royal Bangs (BEST UP AND COMING BAND @ BONNAROO) were ALSO amazing and played this tiny little beer tent but blew me away. Also bad video, so here's something else from Youtube...

And I suppose to even it out, Baron Vaughn at the comedy tent KILLED it! Look him up!

What a great evening to experience Toronto concert crowds...

We went to the Florence and the Machine show at the Koolhaus where the energy was incredible! I couldn't believe I was in Toronto! Soooo great! Everything I had hoped this show to be.

Then we left to go to Wrongbar to catch Sleighbells do all 6 songs off their EP (and we missed 1)... but the crowd was INSANE and even though it was a short set, I feel like it was worth the rush over there and the bum fight we witnessed up the street by the Dollarama.

Miike Snow

Crazy I saw these guys at Wrongbar not too long ago to a crowd of maybe 100, and now they're selling out The Phoenix (I forgot my camera at that show - he played with Jack Penate).

I liked their show better at Wrongbar. This one seemed a bit dark and techy to me... drawn out and techy...

Also, Miike Snow looks like a very thin bear.

Since this was such an early show, I convinced Tristan to go with me to El Convento Rico afterwards to catch their drag show... He felt very uncomfortable filming this for me, but he's just so tall he had such a better vantage point! (S)he was kind of frightening albeit very good at working it...

Local Natives

How I didn't know that the Local Natives were opening up for Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros until the tickets were sold out is beyond me... So last minute, I pulled as many strings as I possibly could and weaseled Tristan and I into the show for free!

Everything's in its right place... ;)

Anyhow, they were INCREDIBLE and worth every phone call/email/text I sent trying to score an in. These guys are gonna blow up! Definitely on my "best of '09" (for those ahead of the game) and "on the look-out in '10" lists!

We also caught Fool's Gold - whom I'm still on the fence with - but this last track was pretty awesome with Local Natives.

I feel bad not having any Edward Sharpe footage but not that bad. I'll make up for it by saying they were better than I had expected (I predicted I might have fallen asleep) and I thoroughly enjoyed seeing Graham and the rest of the crowd sit down during their "love-in" encore. You can google it. Entertaining.

Tune-Yards and The Dirty Projectors

I hadn't listened to anything by Tune-Yards until I found out she was the opening act for The Dirty Projectors. At first, I wasn't sure what to think but after spending some time listening to her Myspace I really wanted to find out how she would piece her songs together live. I was not disappointed. She was pretty awesome. It's not easy looping your own voice to make live harmonies with yourself.

As for the Dirty Projectors - what can I say except that they were so incredible!

I would say that I saw them at Bonnaroo but really, I don't see many bands at Bonnaroo. Rather I hear them and catch glimpses of them when people shift in the crowd because everyone who attends Bonnaroo is taller than me.

Anyhow, we were right up front for this show and I couldn't have been more pleased because actually SEEING them made the whole experience 10x better! I actually GET their harmonies now! Hazaa!

White Denim

I love seeing bands at the Horseshoe because it makes me feel like I'm 15 and in someones garage and the band goes to my boyfriend's cooler-than-my-own highschool.

This was no different seeing White Denim on Wednesday. It was loud and dancey with the band rocking out pretty much eye level with the crowd. This was often the scene of highschool at its best for me. Except substitute garage for various Masonic Lodges. I never bothered to figure out why that was, but it always puzzled me that Masonic Lodges were home to so many rowdy punk shows?

Anyway, they played medleys of their songs, only stopping maybe 3 or 4 times the entire show. They played song after song the whole time and it was glorious! This video doesn't do them ANY justice but watch it anyway because they're awesome!

We went to see Dan Auerbach this weekend at the Phoenix and it was an INCREDIBLE show!

The word of the night for describing him was "romantic". Maybe not in this particular song, but watch him perform Goin' Home and tell me you don't want to just curl up in his beard like a kitten and purr...

Anyway, It's nice to go to a show and leave with an even deeper appreciation for the artist and their music... So needless to say, The Black Keys are now even further up my list of bands to see live. If you get the chance, do yourself a favour and go see him!

I know the whole world is a shit storm over this band (I remember when Zane Lowe was all over these guys when they first debuted), but I just couldn't get into them enough to call myself a fan.

Flying Lotus and Broken Social Scene

I caught Flying Lotus during his Red Bull Music Academy Lecture last week. He's a pretty humble and inspiring guy. If you get to meet him, or listen to him talk about his work, I suggest you jump at the chance. He's quite good live too. He might even sign a poster for you. And not just a signature. I mean cartoon images all over. Turns out he's an animator too. A total geek - and I can relate.

I was at the Harbourfront working at Beats Breaks and Culture and accidentally deleted the clip I had of his set - which was a dumb move because it was AWESOME. I HATE WHEN I DO THAT!!! You'll have to settle for this second rate (or even 3rd rate... bah) clip of him dropping Squarepusher. I stood there wondering how many people in the crowd knew it was Squarepusher tune?

So as I was saying, I was at Beats, Breaks and Culture last weekend. Hip Hop Karaoke was my highlight of the day. I contemplated doing Gin and Juice but decided against it when a woman came up and rapped with her baby strapped in a baby-pack holster thing on her chest. She couldn't be topped. I wish I had filmed some of it. Halfway through I left to check out Scatterpopia starring Insideamind and Lybido. I was going to film some of that, but thought it was weird to bust out my camera in a theatre without permission. Pairing Insideamind's crazy turntabilism with Lybido cast as a dancing alien was a great idea. Alas.

Afterwards, I made it back in time for Broken Social Scene. The show was good but not excellent, which was a huge let down. They canceled the island show (I imagine because of the city strike) and ended up performing for free at the Harbourfront. I was expecting more bangers (if you can call them bangers) for all the film crew and special guests. But overall the show was lacking something. It felt a bit scripted - the kind of script where all the great funny parts are in the trailer of the movie and you go to see the movie and there was nothing better than what was in the trailer. Still good because of those funny parts, but bad because you expected more... that sort of disappointment.

Rock the Bells 2009

I wasn't sure what to expect from the RTB show this year. 2007 in NYC with Wu Tang and Rage Against the Machine will be FOREVER hard to beat. 2008's lineup to me was more impressive than this year's, but the venue choice was AWFUL (that damn airport hanger in Mississauga). This year was the opposite - it was at Molson Amphitheatre (one of my favourite venues - minus the ticket prices) but the lineup wasn't that exciting.

However, the last 2 acts made the entire day worth it for me.

Mos Def replaced Common - which I was actually happy about... and I can't tell you how many times I've seen Mos and Talib play solo gigs and WISHED one would come out to do a Blackstar tune with the other... and it FINALLY happened! My fingers are crossed for a Blackstar reunion at Manifesto 2009!!!!

I've seen Nas something like 4 or 5 times already - so I was more amped to see Damian. But overall both were amazing solo, and even better as a collabo... Here's a clip:

AND THEN... just when I thought the show was over - it ended with K'naan, Damian and Nas doing a track that I've been told is K'naan's - originally done with Damian and now to be done with Nas on the new album.

This was the perfect ending for Toronto - reggae, hip hop and Rexdale. Didn't that bow at the end bring a tear to your eye? Awwww. One love indeed.

Femi Kuti

It's the start of the Harbourfront free concert series! Summer has officially begun! Last weekend King Sunny Ade opened for Femi Kuti.

Next weekend is Holy Fuck on Friday and Broken Social Scene on Saturday.

*This is a little late. I thought I posted this after Canada Day but it was sitting in my Drafts...

We at Manifesto threw a very last minute Michael Jackson tribute party in conjunction with Canada Day yesterday at Yonge and Dundas Square... and WHAT A SUCCESS!

I have to say that I've never seen Y&D that packed before - it was MADNESS! And the vibe was AMAZING! People of all ages singing and dancing in the rain - it was a great way to end the holiday!

Say what you will about the man's last years, but you can't ignore the influence his music and dancing had on generations of people! Last night was 3 hours of straight Jackson hits - but it could've gone on much longer and I guarantee no one would've stopped dancing...

GZA for NXNE

For a live music fiend, I didn't really take advantage of NXNE this year... I hate this wristband business and I felt like it was more quantity than quality with the bands this year. I did, however catch the end of Wintersleep on Friday and snagged a free wristband on Sunday and got to catch the Beat Lounge at Revival. I couldn't stay for the whole thing, but Marmalade tells me Rich Kidd took it. Big Pops second.

I also went to see GZA perform for FREE at Yonge and Dundas Square at the early time of 8PM. I only caught the last half of the performance and as you can see the crowd was reppin' the Wu pretty hard. It's nice to see a lively Toronto crowd - and in the early evening too!

He was followed by The Cool Kids - who I wasn't really feeling. We left early and opted for Portabello burgers and french fries with dijon mayo at Sin & Redemption. What does it tell you that I'd rather pay $5 for fries than stay and listen to a free concert... and believe me, I'm CHEAP!

Today marks the anniversary of Neil Young leaving Crosby Stills Nash and Young.

His first single after going solo was the ever famous "Only Love Can Break Your Heart". He wrote it for Graham Nash who had just broken up with Joni Mitchell.

As if this song isn't amazing and heart wrenching already - knowing this makes it that much BETTER!

Some mysterious band of bearded men opened up for K-os...

I went there a bit skeptical about this show after the Manifesto main event last year @ Nathan Philips... but K-os rocked it pretty hard for the few songs we stayed for. We left early to go to Bang the Party's 3 year Anniversary @ The Boat... Wish we had stayed a little longer to catch a few more songs, but oh well...

As a side note, they were handing out "K-os Rogers paper Dolla Dolla bling" necklaces which was really bizarre... which I thought was a stark contrast against the photo of K-os and David Suzuki being projected onto the screens the whole time since those damn paper dollar bills were scattered all over the spot... I never did get to find out what both were about? Somebody wasn't doing their marketing job right...

It all started because I told Brian I hope to someday visit the Voodoo donut place in Portland for their vegan donuts and maybe to have a voodoo wedding. These days, I youtube just about everything - which led us to a whole world of food eating challenge videos... Here are a few I might enter myself - although I doubt I'd ever win them - but I bet it would be pretty delicious!

Here's the donut challenge from the Voodoo Donut joint... Eat the gianormous donut in less than 80 seconds and you get it for free, and the bragging rights of course... I bet Tristan could win this one HANDS DOWN.

The SF Ice Cream Company in California does this challenge: "The kitchen sink". Eat 8 softball size scoops of ice cream, 8 toppings, whip cream, and 12 cherries under 1 hour 19 mins. You set the new record and win free ice cream for a year... I'd have to train for this. New record is 1 hr 15 mins - done by THIS man!

It's covers week on Carson Daily - and even though I don't watch TV and didn't even know The Carson Daily show still existed, I do watch YouTube while procrastinating at work... so I watched Duke Spirit cover Prince. Ben Harper cover Queen. Lykke Li cover Kings of Leon (again). Couldn't find Adele doing her cover of Bob Dylan but I imagine it was great.

They were ok - but none I felt like posting.

So instead, here are a few covers I like:

The Dirty Projectors cover Black Flag - an interesting interpretation of the song if you've ever heard the Henry Rollins original.

Local Natives (one of the bands I've been following as of late) cover Cecilia. The guy rocking the tree makes me even happier than the Glockenspiel solo!

What I would give to be sitting on that couch... Radiohead covers Portishead.

I guess this isn't really a cover because Lykke Li is still singing but Bon Iver is the band she's with - so I thought I'd throw it in anyway...

I don't know what all the hype is surrounding White Lies.

Equally as confusing and just as infuriating - WHY THE FRIENDLY FIRES HAVE NOT TAKEN OVER THE WORLD YET?

Is it because of how uncomfortably tight the lead singers pants are? Because I'm sure something can be done about that - although it doesn't bother me... It only accentuates his awesome dance moves!

You can't see a bloody thing, but wait for the camera flashes and you can catch a glimpse of Rusko's live set @ The Social on Monday night. I guess you wouldn't think there'd be much to see when filming a DJ set, but the man was playing LIVE - with a bass and some other gadgets.

Unfortunately - the sound system was shot for his set, so while he was playing some heavy tunes you couldn't tell really... I was hoping to fall into cardiac arrest with so much bass (yes, hoping) but alas...

And now for the perfect "who's the old guy" story, it was the neighbour from down the hall who crashed the party, ate our dumplings, and brought his own beer so he could stay. He told us our music (being Nirvana and Pearl Jam of course) was too young for him, so we had him play bass on this tune.

I love how serious "the band" looks here. You can't see it, but DJ Veteran is playing his guitar like Jeff Healy... ("You know you have to play with your eyes closed." - Ryan)

Eddie Vedder: 'Kurt Cobain would like me if he was still alive'

Pearl Jam's Eddie Vedder has said he imagines Kurt Cobain would think he "turned out OK" if he were still alive today, despite the Nirvana frontman lambasting the band throughout their career.

Cobain famously slated Pearl Jam for "Pioneering a corporate, alternative and cock-rock fusion", though the two frontmen did reconcile privately before Cobain's death in 1994.

Speaking to The Sun, Vedder said that although he and Cobain didn't see eye-to-eye, he hoped the iconic frontman would have still been his friend.

"If Kurt were around today, I know he'd say to me, 'Well, you turned out OK,'" he said.

What does that even MEAN?

You know when someone asks how you're doing today, and you feel like shit and just to get them off your back and to be polite you say "I'm ok". That's what I get from this.

In other alternative rock news - Chris Cornell has made a borderline pop dance record that makes me feel really uncomfortable while listening to it... and I only heard his myspace samples. I wish I was joking, but it's REAL. He's got the make-up and waxed eyebrows to prove it... I know he's always been a pretty boy a la Scott Weiland prettiness, but that's not to say they both don't look like I'd run into them at Tattoo Rock Parlour in Toronto wearing Ed Hardy. Ohhhh no...

I'm pretty excited to hear this new album...

Although she's not new at all - I feel like she hasn't really got much play... anywhere... except for when watching Lord of the Rings. Yes - this is the same woman who sang for the LOTR soundtrack... I heard that they planned to use Bjork but she was pregnant and couldn't do it so instead they called up Emiliana... I think that's pretty awesome to be 2nd to Bjork on Peter Jackson's list...

Her album comes out next month on Big Dada and it features Roots Manuva... I'm a sucker for stand up bass...

All-star band - Jack White on the drums w/ Alison Mosshart from the kills on vocals, Jack Lawrence from the Raconteurs on bass (*swoon*), and Dean Fertita from Queens of the Stone Age.

They've been really good at keeping this album from being leaked...

I haven't updated this blog since November?

Well I guess I haven't really seen many shows since then - it seems like during the winter people AND bands go into hibernation.

I did go to Jamaica in December and caught one really lame beach reggae party with headliners... brace yourself... King Yellowman and some lover's rock reggae guy. It was possibly the most bizarre concert experience I've ever had especially with the crazy homeless guy following Tristan around demanding a drink.

Let's never speak of it again.

Following that catastrophe, I moved out of St Lawrence Market to sublet my apartment to a French exchange student in preparation to move to Seoul... only to have my teaching contract pulled and my life yet again in a complete shambles...

So, it wasn't until last month that I started to visit the outside world again.

I went to both Red Bull 3style events in Toronto - and god bless Mensa's soul, I love the guy - but that competition was DRAWN OUT... 15 minutes a DJ I think was all I could handle for the first 4 DJ's... You don't think you'd ever get sick of hearing Pharaoh Monch's Simon Says - but... CAN YOU EVER!

I got denied entry to Hexes and Oh's at CMW because the Mod Club filled their "wristband quota" at 8PM... a whole 20 people were in there. Jerks. I did get to see the Ting Tings on Saturday - who put on a fun show but what was up with the millions of guitar changes, taped up knobs, and playing the same god damn chord over and over again? Katie might've thought she distracted everyone with her rack, but I noticed!

We rushed over to see Bloc Party @ Koolhaus afterwards, and although they had a pretty good light show going on - I'm not a big fan. There. I said it. I don't even like Bloc Party! I feel better getting that off my chest to the whole... 1 person who might read this blog entry (Hi Tristan!)...

Beat Lounge / Black Milk / Herbaliser

It's been a while... I've been slacking with the video - forgetting my camera, not taking video or pictures, skipping out on shows etc. etc.

But I do have a few to upload from the past couple weeks...

Here's a clip of my homeslice Marmalade cue'ing up one of his original beats at the new monthly BEAT LOUNGE at Silver Dollar. I wish I had the REAL clip of this one, but I accidentally deleted it and now you only get a short short taste of his musical genius... My bad.

After that show I went over to Revival in time to catch Black Milk's set. I gotta say, I've seen him do better...

Later that week I hit the Herbaliser show as part of the NuJazz Festival. Here's a clip before the tallest guy in the entire venue (if not the world) stood right infront of me. Balls.

Estelle / The Roots

I caught Estelle, Gym Class Heroes and The Roots show at Sound Academy yesterday.

Estelle delivered, as expected. Her show at The Mod Club was a bit more intimate and experiencing that same vibe as an opening act at the Sound Academy is hard to achieve. But nonetheless, she was great.

She's hilarious. Like Phonte hilarious.

Here's a short clip of her upcoming single Come Over (which she mentioned will be featuring Sean Paul, but I don't remember him being on the album?)

I didn't bother recording any of Gym Class Heroes.
I screwfaced that whole set.
So I'm a hater - SO WHAT.

After the excruciatingly long GCH set, The Roots finally came on and all was right with the world. Not only do I have long personal history with this band (hahaha... they sure do like their Patrón) but I think I've seen this band the most times of any band because they come to Toronto SO OFTEN. But you can't hate because they're incredibly talented and each time they drop something new to switch it up. This rendition of You Got Me made waiting through that GCH set worth it haha...

I hit the Jazzy Jeff party at Republik afterwards. I tried to take some video of some oldschool synchronized R&B dancers there, but it was so dark... too bad because they were killing it! At first Jazzy J was throwing down some WACK SAUCE tracks - but what do you expect, the party was at REPUBLIK for god sakes. But he quickly redeemed himself for all the hip hop heads in the crowd - and thank GOD! Let's hope that the next time he's in town he plays a better venue. Club district makes people CRRRRRAZY.

Friendly Fires / Lykke Li / Crystal Castles

My favourite band of the summer are the Friendly Fires, and of course I had to forget my camera when they opened for Lykke Li on Friday at The Mod Club. I did happen to catch a few photos with my dying blackberry, but it just isn't the same... Believe me - they were both incredible.

The Friendly Fires rock a cowbell like no other...

Lykke Li did a stellar cover of Vampire Weekend's Cape Cod and Tribe Called Quest's Can You Kick It.
Later that same night (after getting my camera) we also checked out the Crystal Castles show at Circa. Here's a clip from the escalator in the main room just before we got kicked off it. Good show - but their free show at the Harbourfront I thought was better...

To end the night off we went to the Dubstep party at Tiger Lounge and took over the joint. HAPPY BIRTHDAY ADAM! No video from there. It got a little messy...

Hercules & Love Affair / Little Brother

Definitely one of the best dance parties of 2008.

I remember MGMT being better at Bonnaroo... but maybe that's because people were actually moving their bodies to the rhythm in something we call "dancing"...

Nevertheless, a good show! I also discovered my newest crush - Brian Lebarton of Beck's band (Cameron sounds like Brian by my third Vodka 7... maybe) - who was rockin' the Dieter from SNL's Sprockets look (remember HIM?) and also plays keys for Sia.

It's just occurred to me that I go to a lot of concerts... Ok maybe it hasn't JUST occurred to me, but I have realized I've got a lot of video sitting on my hard drive that I should and would like to share...

So, starting today, I will. Sadly the quality is sacrificed when uploaded to youtube... but nonetheless they're still pretty good...
